Yesterday a comment was left on one of my YouTube videos regarding the use of the “Fill Handle” – this is where you point your mouse at the bottom right hand corner of a cell, the mouse pointer changes to a little black cross and you can double click to copy a formula or value.
For this user, the Fill Handle was not there. This short video explains how you can turn the Fill Handle on and off.
Hi Mike,
I noticed that in the Windows Excel example that you’re using, the results of the Formulas (=Ax+Bx) are incorrect! All results are 100 less than the correct result and in the last row the difference is even 1600!
Not a major issue for what you are explaining, but I just noticed.
Best regards,
Jan
Oops, my mistake. The outcomes in the Windows example are OK. There is a difference in the formulas used between the two examples. In the Mac version it is =Ax+Bx, but in the Windows example it is =A1+A2 that gets copied.
Best regards,
Jan
Well spotted Jan. I didn’t script or plan this video – it was a quickie in response to a question somebody had asked, hence me not checking the data thoroughly. As you say it doesn’t matter in terms of the issue that I was explaining.
-Mike-
My fill handle was turned off in Excel 2013…Was drivign me mad thanks a million
Thank you so much sir this video was very useful for me at right time
I see the black cross but still doesn’t work!! any other suggestions?
Homood, do you have a blank column to the left of the column that you are trying to autofill? Autofill only works if there is data in the column to the left.
Thank you Mike for the Video, Fill handle was driving me nuts
thank you so much ! =D
That’s solved my problem then. I had a blank column to the left. Thanks.
Fantastic, now I know what was my problem. The blank left column. Many many thanks.
This saved my life. Thanks for the tip!
Hi Mike,
I have just installed MS Office 2013.
In excel everything is set up as it should be. All columns are populated.
Fill handle works as drag and drop, but it doesn’t work as double click. Black cross is showing though.
Any ideas?
Thank you
Tom
You need to have data down the column immediately to the left of the cell you are trying to double click on so Excel knows how far down to copy. Other than that, I have no idea
Thanks for the video
when i double click on the +sign, only the first cell is copied to all the cells in the column. How to fix that?
Thanks
Mike Thomas: Thank you for the tip. That’s exactly what happened with me. I had a blank column to the left of the columns. After I deleted the blank column, I can auto fill again.
when i double click on the +sign, the contents of the first cell are copied to all the cells in the column. I confirmed that the fill handle and drag and drop box is checked and it is. How do I fix this? It worked before.
Hi Jen – most likely you calculation has been set to Manual. Click the Formulas tab on the Ribbon and select Calculation Options and choose AUTOMATIC
My calculation is set to Automatic and Autofill is enabled, however, I still cannot get the pointer to appear when I move my cursor to the lower right corner of a cell. I have been unable to find a solution for this. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
I’ve been trying to understand this problem for a very long time. I never thought about the blank column being the culprit. Many, many thanks.
Hi,
I am having trouble dragging a formula. The formula is linked to a separate excel document so perhaps this is why. When I drag the cell it just copies the value, and not the formula. I just want the formula to update to pull from the next cell down on the separate worksheet, i.e. each cell in the column to refer to a different cell in the other worksheet. Can this be done automatically? Thank you
Hi, I’m having trouble still because my drag and drop is checked, also my overwriting cells, but i’m still not getting a black cross. It’s just the white one. Do you know why this is? Thanks
Hi Moshe. I have never experienced this problem so am unable to give you an answer based on my use of Excel. I too have searched the Internet looking for an answer but cannot find anything apart from make sure Drag and Drop is checked, which it is for you. Others have exactly the same situation as you and no-one has provided a solution 🙁
Mike
Thanks a lot. It helped me.
Thanks a lot! Worked well!!
Thanks a bunch Mike, exactly the solution I needed!
