Although my tagline is “Productivity-Boosting Excel and Power BI Training”, I realised there’s hardly any Power BI tutorials on this website, so I thought I’d rectify that by starting with a 15 minute “how to create a simple report” tutorial.

If you don’t know what Power BI is, it’s a Windows-only application from Microsoft that is used to build reports and dashboards and the good news is that it’s totally free to use. No subscription. No licence fee. It’s totally free.

In this video tutorial I show you how to download and install Power BI Desktop and then how to create a simple report using data from Excel. The video covers…

  • Importing data from Excel
  • Creating a simple column chart
  • Creating a card to display a single value KPI
  • Creating a Slicer to enable the report to be filtered

NOTE: Having said it’s totally free, there are some caveats. If you want to publish your report to the Power BI Cloud, known as the Power BI Service, so that you can share your report with others, or you want to take advantage of other features of the Power BI Service, such as security and automated refresh, then you do need to buy a Power BI licence.
